what makes you sad?

What makes you sad?

I feel sad when i saw people in all around the world suffered from natural disaster. And now, China, my own country, and my friends in China, is suffering from debris flow.  Many people died and others were injured badly from the previous Sichan earth quake. Youngsters like me had lost their parents and friends. I had view some picture online, its about a 8years old boy and his sister 3 years old, had lost both their father and mother. They had no relatives in the world anymore. And the little boy need to take care of his young sister, he is just a  infancy boy who do not even know how to take care of himself. But now, he need to look after his little sister, while others childs were playing, hes feeding his sister, i cry badly while reading the new article.
I feel that i am so lucky that live in a safe place like Singapore. No disaster and it is peace. I feel guilty. I felt sorry about them, the little boy are so innocent, with his sister. Both were still so young, why do they need to suffered this kind of horrible disaster? Not only them, there were still many other child that had suffered from the disaster. I feel so sad to know the facts that millions of people had lost their home, and millions of people had died.
Personally, I donate some money to the Chinese Embassy. Althought it is very little amount of money but i really want to do some things to help them. And from the deep of my heart, I would  grieve over the unfortunate people. I wish people will stop suffering from the natural disaster.

cross country

Annual Cross Country

Today is chongboon secondary’s Annual Cross Country. Not willing to go but it is established. Wake up in the early morning and taking bus 165 to the maritchi reservoir. The air is really fresh there. But it is also very hot! Many people crowded at one place, and all the noise scared away the birds.

We all assembled at the huge tree and waited for our teacher taking attendance. Follow by the pledge taking and the national anthem singing. After that the secondary 2 pupils went to LIM BO SENG’s tomb. And ms sasi briefly explained to us about the history of LIM BO SENG.

After that we began our race. Truly, it is really tiring but also fun! I ran through out the jungle. In the jungle I never stop before, but after out of the jungle I began to fell like given up. However, the red cross pupils at the side of the road kept asking me to run and encourage me. So I manage to get a 18th position for my cross country.

After running, I felt my heart was burning. It can not stop racing at once, my face going red like apple and I’m sweating like just bathing. So I bought a can of green tea for the red cross cadet.

After that was prize giving. Obviously, I didn’t get any prize. Hahas. But vishnu and his friend manage to get 1st in the lower sec competition. They were so fast! I didn’t even saw them.

I’m really happy today. I ran the fastest among my friend. Haha, I know it’s kinda silly. But I’m looking forwards to the next year’s cross country. Hope that I can get in top 10. haha. Dreaming.

sports fiesta

Sports Fiesta

This is my second year participating in the sports fiesta. I don’t like it actually. The weather is so hot and it’s held so early in the hottest month this year. It’s like burning us! Really! Same as last year, it is held at Serangoon Stadium.

I went there by my self. It is early in the morning and the weather is really burning me. The stadium was filled with people, super crowded and it’s noisy as a market. I saw my classmate and went to say hello to them. After taking our attendance we break in to our own house and start the events.

I watch the competitors compete with full of their strength and I really have a great admiration for their spirit. One thing I have to say is, no matter what position they get. They are winners already.

The results of the competition, actually is not what I want to see. Haha! But never mind, at least my house gets second. They had tried their best already! Shouldn’t be upset, hydro is the best!

Although today’s weather is really hot. But I’m still very happy because I thought it will be a very boring day. But my house gets 3rd place. Congratulation! Hydros! You will get 1st next year! I trust you!

Looking forward to the sports fiesta next year!

Principal
ChongBoon Secondary School

Dear Mrs Chan

UNHAPPY INCIDENTS IN THE SCHOOL LIBRARY

My friends and I have been going to the school library lately to do some self-study. However, we are unhappy with a few incidents which took place recently. I am writing this letter to inform you the incidents and I hoped you will take action to ensure that the library is a conducive environment for self-study.

There was this of student who were very rude to the librarian. They shouted at the librarian when she ask them not to make noise in the library. When the librarian warned them that she will report them to the Discipline Master. They became more noisy as they wanted to challenge the librarian to report them all. I think this should not happened in the library, these boy should be punish for made noise in the library and been rude to the librarian. They should be ban from entering library in order to make sure the library is a quiet and peaceful environment for study.

Another group of student actually break the rules. They managed to sneak food in. They even spilled their drinks onto the table. The table became so sticky and attracted the ants as those drinks were sweet drinks. They messed up the place and left it. Food are not allow to bring into the library was stated clearly on the library door. These students should be punish by as they made the library a dirty and unpleasant environment for study.

There was this boy who wore his PE attire into the library. He was soaked in perspiration. He may catch a cold as the air condition in the library is very strong. This made others in the library feel unpleasant as there were odour. People should not allow to enter the library in PE attire. Pupils should change into their uniform before entering the library. This should be coerce in order to make the library a conducive environment for study.

There was a group of students playing games on the computers for a very long time. Other students who want to use the computer for school work were waiting impatiently and were very angry with them. They inform the group of students that they have assignment to do, but those student were just ignored them. Some even shouted at them to ask them to get lost. I think these student should get severe punishment as they were using the computers for playing games and even threatening other in the library. School computers are to use for school project and assignments. This should be enforce in order to make our school library a conducive place for study.

I hoped there will be peace and quiet, as it did not use to be like this. I hope you could do something to make the library a conducive environment for study.

Your sincerely
HanYin

Mother

Mother is the most important people in my world. A mother can give everything she has to her child. Many people say mother is the most greatful person in the world. And it is true. They give birth to us, take care of us, teach us what is the right and wrong. The wrinkles on their face shows how she had concern of us for the minute we had born. She never complain for a word, everything she do is so greatful. We need to cherish this precious love that our kind mother had give us. Mother is the most important people in my life.

International Friendship day

Secondary 2 - Our School.

Questions:

- What are the relationships that are important to you within the school context?

Schoolmates and I. As a foreigner, i would like to build a good friendship with my multi racial school mates. Together, we can build a harmony school enviroment for study.
- What do you know about the history of your school/CCA?

My school is a new school which only starts in 1994. It's the year i've been born. It may not be a senior school but the potential is great. I believe. My school had won many enviromental award, i'm proud of  my school. My school demonstrate well in green enviromental education. Which inturns make us a thinkinh and gracious citizen.
- Share a story about your school/CCA. It can be funny ones, successful ones and difficult ones.

I had paticipate in the cross country for 2 times. I manage to finish all the running which i'm happy with it. The distance is super long and i almost colapsed in the half way of it. But i perserve my spirit and manage to finish it. The activitie taught me perserverance and excellence.
- Have the stories you heard from your classmates changed the way you view/feel about your school?

Yes, Chongboon is not as good as other school compare to other school like mayflower. My school has many gangsters. I often heard public apologic. I think we could improve this situation.

Deforestation

Tropical forests include dense rainforests, where rainfall is abundant year-round; seasonally moist forests, where rainfall is abundant, but seasonal; and drier, more open woodlands. Tropical forests of all varieties are disappearing rapidly as humans clear the natural landscape to make room for farms and pastures, to harvest timber for construction and fuel, and to build roads and urban areas. Although deforestation meets some human needs, it also has profound, sometimes devastating, consequences, including social conflict, extinction of plants and animals, and climate change—challenges that aren’t just local, but global. NASA supports and conducts research on tropical forests from space-based and ground-based perspectives, helping provide the information that national and international leaders need to develop strategies for sustaining human populations and preserving tropical forest biodiversity.
Impacts of Deforestation: Biodiversity Impacts

Although tropical forests cover only about 7 percent of the Earth’s dry land, they probably harbor about half of all species on Earth. Many species are so specialized to microhabitats within the forest that they can only be found in small areas. Their specialization makes them vulnerable to extinction. In addition to the species lost when an area is totally deforested, the plants and animals in the fragments of forest that remain also become increasingly vulnerable, sometimes even committed, to extinction. The edges of the fragments dry out and are buffeted by hot winds; mature rainforest trees often die standing at the margins. Cascading changes in the types of trees, plants, and insects that can survive in the fragments rapidly reduces biodiversity in the forest that remains. People may disagree about whether the extinction of other species through human action is an ethical issue, but there is little doubt about the practical problems that extinction poses.

First, global markets consume rainforest products that depend on sustainable harvesting: latex, cork, fruit, nuts, timber, fibers, spices, natural oils and resins, and medicines. In addition, the genetic diversity of tropical forests is basically the deepest end of the planetary gene pool. Hidden in the genes of plants, animals, fungi, and bacteria that have not even been discovered yet may be cures for cancer and other diseases or the key to improving the yield and nutritional quality of foods—which the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization says will be crucial for feeding the nearly ten billion people the Earth will likely need to support in coming decades. Finally, genetic diversity in the planetary gene pool is crucial for the resilience of all life on Earth to rare but catastrophic environmental events, such as meteor impacts or massive, sustained volcanism.

Soil Impacts

With all the lushness and productivity that exist in tropical forests, it can be surprising to learn that tropical soils are actually very thin and poor in nutrients. The underlying “parent” rock weathers rapidly in the tropics’ high temperatures and heavy rains, and over time, most of the minerals have washed from the soil. Nearly all the nutrient content of a tropical forest is in the living plants and the decomposing litter on the forest floor.

When an area is completely deforested for farming, the farmer typically burns the trees and vegetation to create a fertilizing layer of ash. After this slash-and-burn deforestation, the nutrient reservoir is lost, flooding and erosion rates are high, and soils often become unable to support crops in just a few years. If the area is then turned into cattle pasture, the ground may become compacted as well, slowing down or preventing forest recovery.

Social Impacts

Tropical forests are home to millions of native (indigenous) people who make their livings through subsistence agriculture, hunting and gathering, or through low-impact harvesting of forest products like rubber or nuts. Deforestation in indigenous territories by loggers, colonizers, and refugees has sometimes triggered violent conflict. Forest preservation can be socially divisive, as well. National and international governments and aid agencies struggle with questions about what level of human presence, if any, is compatible with conservation goals in tropical forests, how to balance the needs of indigenous peoples with expanding rural populations and national economic development, and whether establishing large, pristine, uninhabited protected areas—even if that means removing current residents—should be the highest priority of conservation efforts in tropical forests.

My reflection: Deforestation is people cutting down whole forests of trees, and making it even less likely for humans to survive. Trees supply oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide, and hold down the soil from washing away or making landslides. The destruction and cutting down of forests is often done to clear land for farming, mining, roads, and grazing of cattle. That causes increased atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, a factor in global warming. By destroying the tropical forests, we risk our own quality of life, gamble with the stability of climate and local weather, threaten the existence of other species, and undermine the valuable services provided by biological diversity. This will lead to soil erosion, floods, water pollution, people who depend on natural resources for their everyday survival. Forest loss will reduces the availability of renewable resources like timber, medicinal plants, nuts and fruit, and game. This people will lose their food supply if deforestation continue. We should not be so selfish that only think about ourselves and ruin others life. Deforestation should be reduce in order to save people that are depend on the forest. While saving them, we are also doing out parts to save our earth.

Reflective Summary on Climate Change

I learnt that climate change is cause by global warming. Global warming is about temperature rises and make the earth become warmer. Ice will melt, cause the sea level to rise and drown the surrounding. As the temperature rising it will change the ecosystem, threaten many extinct animals and species. It will also cause floods and droughts because of the extreme weather. And hurricanes will change in frequency and strength. High temperature will affect human health.

I use to think that climate change is a natural phenomenon. But after this research, i realize that climate change is a global problem that everyone is concern about. Human is the main creator of global warming. We had creating too many greenhouse gases by deforestation, factory farming, and burning too many fossil fuels. We are also creating carbon footprint in our daily life by using electrical appliances. This will contribute to global warming and lead to climate change.

We still have space to improve the current situation. I am glad to hear that there were many people in the world were concern about the problem and actually had did something to help. But there were also villagers still conducting deforestation, factorys were also producing many greenhouse gases. I hoped all this will be prohibit, we can use renewable energy as it can prevent global warming.

I can improve the current situation by changing my life style such as having more outdoor activities instead of staying at home watching television. I will also urge people around me to reduce using electricity. I will used recycled products as they use less energy to manufacture.

I suggest we should reduce our carbon footprint in our daily life such as taking public transport in order to save electricity. The government should also do their part in spreading information about the importance of stop global warming in order to prevent climate change.

Climate change

The consequences of global warming Consequences for the climate

Global warming is very likely to produce other changes :

– retreat of glaciers,

– melting of pack ice,

– rise in average sea level,

– changes in precipitation patterns, resulting in floods and droughts,

– increases in the frequency and intensity of extreme climate events such as hurricanes and cyclones,

– changes in the circulation patterns of marine currents, such as the Gulf Stream and the North-Atlantic Drift, which could result in the cooling of certain regions (Western Europe, …). (see picture 1)

Some of these change have already started and can be traced back to global warming. In particular, this is the case with the melting of glaciers. These climate changes are clearly going to have consequences on the flora and fauna. It is forecast that a large number of species are in danger of disappearing. (see picture 2)

Consequences for human beings

Besides an increase in natural catastrophes, agricultural yields could be modified and the zones where carriers of diseases such as cholera and malaria are present could be extended. Many growing populations living in tropical zones could be particularly impacted by climate change. Other populations could be displaced as a result of rising sea levels.

Whole peoples could see their way of life modified, like the Inuits of Kuujjuaq (Northern Canada) whose mayor, Larry Watt, ordered air conditioners in June 2006 after temperatures reached 31 °C !

Economic consequences

Calculations of the economic impact of global warming are very difficult to make. Some economists speak of a cost of two euros per tonne of carbon, whereas others suggest 50 euros. Among the various figures put forward, one estimates that global warming might cost up to one percentage point of economic growth. It is worth noting that banks, insurance companies, farmers and developing countries are likely to be the most exposed. However, depending on the capacity of adaptation shown by the economy and by political organisations and on possible technological revolutions triggered by the challenge of climate change, a more optimistic outlook is not to be entirely excluded.

My reflection
Climate change refers to seasonal changes over a long period of time.
The causes are greenhouse gases produce by human and deforestation. Factory pollution and carbon footprint. These will lead to global warming. The consuquences are: increasing earth temperature. Melting ice cause flooding. Temperature too high cause drought and diseases.ecosystem changing. (animal will lost their homeland and cause them to extinct)

Let's began to save our EARTH!
If not our children will suffer!

What is a carbon footprint? (Climate Change)

http://www.carbonfootprint.com/carbonfootprint.html
( The website also teach you how to calculate your carbon footprint. Go and try it! It's fun! )

Before this research: What is a carbon footprint? Footprint with carbon dioxide? I know nothing about carbon footprint.
What have i learnt through this research: I learnt that carbon footprint is a measure of the impact our activities have on the environment, and in particular climate change. It relates to the amount of greenhouse gases produced in our day-to-day lives through burning fossil fuels for electricity, heating and transportation and other activities that using electricity.
We can reduce our carbon footprint by:
( Conservation of Electricity) Turn off all the electronic devices when not in use.
( Conservation of water ) Not to use clean water to wash the floor or planting. You can collect rain water. Use water wisely.

GLOBAL WARMING (Climate Change)

global warming

http://environment.about.com/od/faqglobalwarming/f/globalwarming.htm

Before this research: I only know that global warming is all about the Earth getting hotter and hotter. Then it will change the climate. But i don't know what cause Global warming.

After this research: I learnt that Global warming is cause by human activities. Human altered the chemical composition of the atmosphere through a buildup of greenhouse gases – primarily carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. If we continue to produce this greenhouse gases, the rising global temperatures will cause sea level to rise and alter local climate conditions, affecting forests, crop yields, and water supplies. It may also affect human health, animals, and many types of ecosystems. Deserts may expand and some of our countryside may be permanently altered.

SAVE OUR EARTH!!

Hachiko (A ture story that will make u cry)

In 1924, Hachikō was brought to Tokyo by his owner, Hidesaburō Ueno, a professor in the agriculture department at the University of Tokyo. During his owner's life Hachikō saw him off from the front door and greeted him at the end of the day at the nearby Shibuya Station. The pair continued their daily routine until May 1925, when Professor Ueno did not return on the usual train one evening. The professor had suffered a stroke at the university that day. He died and never returned to the train station where his friend was waiting.

Hachikō was given away after his master's death, but he routinely escaped, showing up again and again at his old home. Eventually, Hachikō apparently realized that Professor Ueno no longer lived at the house. So he went to look for his master at the train station where he had accompanied him so many times before. Each day, Hachikō waited for Professor Ueno to return. And each day he did not see his friend among the commuters at the station.
The permanent fixture at the train station that was Hachikō attracted the attention of other commuters. Many of the people who frequented the Shibuya train station had seen Hachikō and Professor Ueno together each day. They brought Hachikō treats and food to nourish him during his wait.
This continued for 10 years, with Hachikō appearing only in the evening time, precisely when the train was due at the station.
Hachikō died on March 8, 1935. He died at the same spot where his owner found him.His faithfulness to his master's memory impressed the people of Japan as a spirit of family loyalty all should strive to achieve.

Hachiko's stuffed and mounted remains are kept at the National Science Museum of Japan in Ueno, Tokyo.

Total Defence Day

Total Defence Day was to remind students that Singapore is defensible and is worth defending. Our school celebrated it by giving us only 1 piece of bread and a bottle of water. We could not have our second serving because during the World War 2, the peoples were starving because of the shortage of food. We need to remember that they had a difficult period.

We had pratice the fire drill, when the emergency bell had rung. The whole school was rushing down to the field instucted by the relief teacher. We were sitting under the hot sun and waiting for instruction. It was super hot and we were almost burnt. I hate this part of the event as it almost made me faint.

After that, we also have to fill in a survey from that was about how the event was going ture and how it can improve in the future.

The Total Defence day was a very meaningful day and we must bear in mind that defense ourself is very important.

Growth day to Sentosa The beach fiesta

This year's Growth Day was much different with the previous years. The school had brought us to the Sentosa and we were participateing in the Beach Fiesta that the ITE had organize. I really appreciate the events. Thank you ITE.

Sentosa was really a very beautiful place no wonder it attract so many tourism. Although the sun was burning us, we were still very exciting about the events. There were many game organize by the ITE and we were standing there hesitated that which station we are going to. I had played many game such as arrowing and puzzle. I enjoy playing the game very much. In the end i had win the prize because i had my stiker book full.

I learnt that the ITE friends were all very friendly and thanks for the fiesta that had been well planed for us. Thanks very much!

3.Chinese New Year & Deepavali & Hari Raya Celebrations [NE] 2010

14th february 2010 is Chinese Lunar New Year! Miss Jey and Miss Hwee were very busy that day because they have many thing to do. So Mrs Singh the relief teacher take us that day. After the long breifing had finished, She brought us to all the station that our school had organize for us.

There were so many station! I was too curious to get a look for every station. The Red cross station had shown all the activities that they had done. Their training is so fun and meaningful! I had also saw the cheerobic station, the training was very hard and they had put in alot of effort. I think that was the reason why they get the champion ship. Cheerleader rock!

The most interesting part of the day was the performance. I like the chinese dancer's performance. They were very agility in dancing. After different culture had finished their perform. We were been dismiss.

I rushed home all the way because the deliciou food that mother had cook for the day was waiting for me!

Bad day (English compo)

When i first step in to the school, my happiness start to seep away. The teacher start to scold the students that never bring the books, the students that make noise and the students that they don't feel like. Everyday was the same. I quickly get my position to sit down and start reading my books. And start to read my book seriously.

After a few minutes, i heard some girls giggling there and i felt so anonying. I turn back and ask them to be quiet with a gentle voice," shhh! keep quiet please, thank you!"

"Is that your buisness? shout your mouth and read your books! Busy body!" She continued to chit chat with her friends.

"You dare to say me busybody? Then what are you? chickenbody or what, shout up your big mouth and keep quiet!" I shouted with impatient.

"The girl that shout come out and the group of girls all come out!" her words wew like a thurderbolt out of a clear blue sky.

"Walao! See la, you busybody shout what la! make all of us get scold." The girl blamed me.

"Shout up your mouth, i say come out. quickly!"

I bit my lower lip and forced myself to go up. My mind was blank.

And all the students started to stared at us.

"Why are you making such a racket?..." She asked with a thunder voice.

"No...It's not me, i'm just asking them to keep quiet!" I shook my head in dential.

"Still laughing there, and you don't try to lie to me! All of you stay back and do pride time after school!" She made us stand infront the whole school and yelled at us at the top of her voice.

I shuffled my feet, tears streaked down my cheeks. All the students look at us, i felt naked and ghastly and vulnerable. I know how a person die of shame now.

What a bad day for me?

My Aspirations for 2010

2009 has been an unlucky year for me, i wish 2010 will be my lucky year.

First important wishes is to get good result in 2010 as 2009 my result wasn't good enough. Infact i've been a lazy bone through out the half year! I wanna change! "stop dreaming, start learning!" This is what i've been told to myself since the begining of 2010. Reading more books will help to improve English grammer skill and pratice makes perfact!

Second is to get a new laptop as the old one really driving me crazy! It works like a snail! when ever i need to use laptop for important matter, it will stuck there for a half hour then make me late for works. As if it's purposely aiming at me. I'm now using the old clumsy laptop as it already make me restart the computor for a few times.

Third, spend more time with my dearest brother as he's coming on the lunar newyear. I'm so happy that i can't wait to see him! Wish him all the best with his work and will find a true love.

Lastly all my parents and friend stay healthy and happy forever!
